Group Agency and Artificial Intelligence

Abstract The aim of this exploratory paper is to review an under-appreciated parallel between group agency and artificial intelligence. As both phenomena involve non-human goal-directed agents that can make a difference the social world, they raise some similar moral regulatory challenges, which require us rethink our anthropocentric assumptions. Are humans always responsible for those entities’ actions, or could entities bear responsibility themselves? Could engage in normative reasoning? even have rights status? I will tentatively defend (increasingly widely held) view that, under certain conditions, intelligent systems, like corporate entities, might qualify as holders limited legal personhood. further suggest regulators should permit use autonomous systems high-stakes settings only if are engineered function (not just intentional) and/or there liability-transfer arrangement place. finally possibility ever became phenomenally conscious, be case extending stronger status them, but argue now, remains very hypothetical.
